Kappa Kappa Psi operates primarily as a student service and leadership recognition society whose chief aim is to assist the Director of Bands in developing the leadership and enthusiasm that is required of his/her band. Kappa Kappa Psi's goals are to provide the band not only with organized and concentrated service activities, but to give members valid and wholesome experiences in organization, leadership, and social contacts. The honorary nature of membership is based on the premise that "it is an honor to be selected to serve" this band, its department of music, its sponsoring institution, and the cause of band music in the nation's colleges and universities.
OBU's chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi organizes events for the band that are service-related. The group also provides activities outside of the band for the OBU Symphonic Band members. Kappa Kappa Psi is responsible for a large amount of fundraising for band activities. Annual projects include raking leaves, worship evenings and working with the Salvation Army.
Membership in Kappa Kappa Psi is open to students who are involved in the OBU band program (Bison Jazz Orchestra or Symphonic Band), have completed at least one semester in the program, possess good character and leadership potential, and have completed the process of membership education required of all members.
