SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Jacob Daffron, Class of 2023

Hometown: Edmond, Oklahoma
Degree: Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies

As Jacob Daffron’s classification as college senior soon turns to OBU alumni, he recalls how he has grown personally during his four years on Bison Hill.

He recognizes how this career field has fostered growth in his interpersonal relationships, leadership abilities, communication skills and personal confidence.

“My professors are a great influence and resource for me. One of my favorite professors is Dr. Kaylene Barbe. She is also my advisor and always makes herself available to answer my questions. Dr. Barbe has helped me envision my opportunities and goals, while offering helpful insight and encouragement,” he said.

When determining what college to attend after high school, Jacob recalled, “The amount of scholarships I received from OBU is what made the difference for me to attend. As I toured a few state colleges and balanced the amount of academic and other scholarships awarded here at OBU, this was the best financial decision for my family. Plus, I had always heard of their excellent academics and campus culture,” said Jacob.

As a student in the communication arts division, Jacob notes the meaningful classes he has experienced. Those courses include intercultural communication, advertising, interpersonal communication, public relations and social media, political communication and persuasion. As part of the program requirements, Jacob participated in a semester-long paid internship during the fall of 2022. He worked as a sales and marketing intern three days a week in Oklahoma City with Citywide Facility Solutions.

“The internship was a worthwhile experience. I was able to put into practice many of the fundamental principles I have been learning. I gained experience in customer relations, problem solving, managing various business accounts, and representing the company in a positive way to those we serve,” he said.

“After graduation, I want to pursue a position in outside sales. It would be a great profession for me to combine public relations, communication, marketing strategies, and interpersonal relations,” said Jacob.

During the past few years, Jacob has served as both vice-president and social chairman of OBU’s social club, Beta Gamma Theta, where he gained valuable leadership experience. He also participates in various campus intramural sports including football and basketball.

In regard to his relationships with other students, Jacob says, “I love the close-knit community at OBU and the fact that people know each other on a first-name basis. With each new year, I have learned to have more intentional conversations with others. Something meaningful to me is weekly chapel where fellow students lead worship.”

“As I am about to graduate, I would tell others thinking about OBU, ‘You will find your place here. Jump in and give 100%. What you will discover is people who, like a family, will surround you and love you.’”

Let’s do this.
