OBU Theatre to Present Chekhov’s ‘Three Sisters’ April 25-28

April 12, 2019

OBU Theatre will present “Three Sisters,” hitting the stage April 25-28. The play was written by Anton Chekhov and translated to English by Laurence Senelick. The production will take place in Sarkeys Black Box Theater.

The production will include evening performances April 25, 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee will take place April 28 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased online or in the Sarkeys Telecommunication Center. The play is most appreciated by those 13 and up.

In the play, three sisters, Olga, Masha and Irina, live with their brother in a small town in Russia. The girls live ordinary lives with their loved ones nearby. The only interesting thing surrounding this family is the military men around them. Throughout the play, the sisters have a dream of moving back to the big city of Moscow. Along the way, the sisters encounter struggles with work, heartbreak and family crises. How will the sisters learn from these struggles? More importantly, will they ever get back to Moscow?

The play is under the direction of Dr. David Coley. Coley was assistant professor of theatre at St. Gregory’s University from 2014 until its closure in 2017. He earned a Ph.D. in Theatre from Louisiana State University. While at SGU, he directed 13 productions, including “The Tempest,” “Electra,” “The 39 Steps,” “Wit” and “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” He also taught a variety of theatre and film classes. He currently serves as an adjunct instructor at OBU in the theatre program, having taught playwriting and oral interpretation.

“Chekhov’s Three Sisters is quite possibly the greatest achievement by, in my opinion, the greatest playwright who ever lived,” Coley said. “It represents the Russian dramatist at his most insightful, his most critical and his most wryly comical. His depiction of a society that teeters on the verge of change while fighting it with every step is a prescient vision that speaks volumes today.”

The cast of this performance is comprised of students from OBU including sophomore theatre and digital media arts major Kimberlie McCutchen as Olga, senior theatre major Anna Tyler as Masha, freshman theatre major Anna Smolen as Irina, senior theatre major Chase Hendrickson as Audrey, sophomore theatre and student ministry major Bayleigh Platter as Natasha, and junior communications major Courtlin Haygarth as Vershinin.
