Martin to Lead Winter Bible Study Clinic Oct. 24

Dr. Michael Martin, dean of the School of Christian Service at Oklahoma Baptist University, will lead OBU's annual Winter Bible Study Clinic Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Geiger Center.

This year's Winter Bible Study Clinic focuses on 1 and 2 Timothy.

In these letters Paul provided direction both for Timothy and for the church. Today's church leaders and church members can benefit from hearing Paul's words of encouragement and instruction as he highlights the necessity of standing firm for the gospel.

The emphasis in these letters on the importance of the apostolic faith and scripture, the character of leaders in the church and the challenge of maintaining a positive faith and positive ministry even in the face of opposition are words believers today need to hear and apply.

Martin, formerly dean of theology at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, joined OBU as dean of the School of Christian Service Aug. 1, 2003.

Martin had served on the faculty at Golden Gate Seminary, in Mill Valley, Calif., since 1984. He moved to the rank of full professor of New Testament interpretation in 1997, and was promoted to serve as the seminary's first dean of theology in November 2002. Before starting his 19-year tenure at GGBTS, he taught religion at California Baptist College from 1981-84, serving as chair of the college's division of religion from 1982-84.

He is the author of the "1 & 2 Thessalonians" commentary for the New American Commentary, published by Broadman and Holman. He has written numerous articles, papers and Bible study materials.

Martin earned a Ph.D. degree in New Testament studies from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and also holds an M.Div. degree from Southwestern. He completed a bachelor of arts degree in religion and philosophy from Dallas Baptist College.

There is no charge for the clinic. However, the on-campus lunch will be $5.50, which may be paid at the door.
