OBU Women’s Day Invites Ladies throughout State to Campus

During the annual chapel service designated to recognize contributions of women to the university's past and present, Oklahoma Baptist University will host one of women's ministry's most sought after speakers, Esther Burroughs, a 1959 graduate of OBU, April 4 in the university's Raley Chapel.

Women from across the state are invited to attend the women's day chapel and luncheon festivities.

With a career marked by ministry to people of all ages, Burroughs draws from her rich experiences in her present role as director of Treasures of the Heart, a speaking and writing ministry.

Her career has included service as a YMCA program director, as a church youth activities minister, and a nine-year term as campus minister at Samford University. She moved from the Birmingham, Ala., school in 1980 to become assistant director of the special ministries department at the Southern Baptist Convention's Home Mission Board.

In 1986 she became assistant director for field staff with the board's church growth and associational evangelism department. In 1997, she moved to her full-time role as director of Treasures of the Heart.

She is on the evangelism committee of Baptist World Alliance, and on the advisory boards of Women's Enrichment Ministries, the Florida Baptist Convention's Women's Ministry and Missions program, and Aspire magazine.

Burroughs often speaks on a wide range of issues, including evangelism, servanthood, and family. As a featured lecturer for the Staley Foundation, she speaks to college students around the country on friendship, dating, marriage, the Christian home, and missions. She also has served as a featured speaker at Glorieta and Ridgecrest Baptist conference centers.

Burroughs has written several books and numerous pamphlets and magazine articles. In addition, she has been the lyricist for eight musicals, collaborating with her husband, Bob, also a 1959 OBU graduate, who is a composer and director of church music for the Florida Baptist Convention. The Burroughses have two children, Melody and David, and five grandchildren.
