OBU Variety Show Makes Noble Complex Debut

Oklahoma Baptist University's students will be "Under the Biggie Top" during the circus theme talent and variety show Saturday, Sept. 9.

Since 1963, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) has begun the fall semester with the production of Biggie.

"The purpose of Biggie is to provide entertainment for the student body but also to provide an opportunity for students to show their talents to the student community," said Monica Mullins, assistant dean of students and CAB sponsor.

Students audition in order to make the show as either emcees or acts.

"During auditions we look for creativity, originality, diversity--things that are crowd pleasers, " Mullins said. "We want acts that students and parents will enjoy seeing performed."

CAB members chose diverse acts, ranging from an original drum solo, blues musical group, and a solo piano performance, to a dance number.

This year, 11 talent acts will debut during Biggie.

Due to on-going renovations in Raley Chapel, the show has been moved to the university's Noble complex.

"I was a little scared about the sound in the Noble Complex at first, but they improved the sound system. They gym fits well into our circus theme," said James Pendergrast, co-director with senior Emily Bender. Both students are senior CAB members.

Between the acts the emcees will entertain the audience with short skits. The emcees and directors are responsible for writing an original script to fit the theme.

"This year there is a lot of physical humor to go along with the circus theme," said emcee Brian Nelson, a senior CAB member. "We have a lot more space to work with in the gym and have to play to both sides of the audience. Being in the gym enables us to do a lot of new things."

Mullins estimates that between 1,500 to 1,700 students, alumni and parents will attend this year's show.
