Biography

Dr. Stephanie Karidas, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an Associate Professor of Speech-Language Pathology and serves as the Director of Research and Scholarship for the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program. She brings well-established academic, clinical, and research expertise in neurologic communication disorders to the program, strengthening its focus on aphasia and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Dr. Karidas’s scholarly interests focus on advancing evidence-based treatments for neurologic communication disorders and enhancing long-term outcomes for affected individuals. Her primary research areas include aphasia treatment research and replication studies aimed at validating and strengthening therapeutic approaches. She is also deeply committed to improving quality of life for individuals with TBI, particularly through community-based and peer-led support initiatives.

Dr. Karidas is the founder and lead speech-language pathologist of B.I.G. (Brain Injury Group), a peer support group for young adults recovering from traumatic brain injury. Since its inception in 2020, B.I.G. has connected and served survivors across more than 18 states, providing a platform for mutual support, community engagement, and recovery-focused resources.

In addition to her research and clinical programming, Dr. Karidas holds a leadership role within the national rehabilitation community, serving as Secretary on the executive committee of the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification Network – Neurogenic Communication Group (ACRM RTS-NG), which contributes to advancing practice standards and research in neurorehabilitation.

Dr. Karidas’s academic portfolio includes teaching graduate-level courses in neuroscience, research methods, and aphasia, where she prepares future clinicians and researchers with a solid foundation in both scientific inquiry and evidence-based clinical practice. Her work bridges the domains of academic research, clinical innovation, and community-based support, reflecting her commitment to improving both scientific understanding and lived outcomes for individuals with neurologic communication disorders.

Prior to her current academic appointment, Dr. Karidas earned her Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders, following completion of graduate degrees in Speech-Language Pathology and Phonetics. She has taught and supervised clinical practice in academic settings and maintains active engagement in professional organizations dedicated to neurologic communication sciences.
