Credit by Examination

Show what you already know and earn up to 30 semester hours of college credit before you set foot in a classroom.

OBU accepts scores from the College Board AP program, CLEP subject exams and the International Baccalaureate program, along with our own advanced standing and performance exams. Credit you earn is recorded on your OBU transcript, so you can start college with momentum.

How it works

Three steps from test day to transcript.

    Take the exam

    Choose AP, CLEP, IB or an OBU exam. Fees and scheduling depend on the testing agency or your high school.
  2. 2

    Send your scores

    Report AP and CLEP scores to OBU with college code 6541. For OBU exams, pre-register in the Academic Center.
  3. 3

    See your credit

    The registrar sends written notice of your results as soon as scores arrive. Credit is recorded on your transcript with a grade of S.

Which exam is right for you?

Required scores are subject to change, so review the current equivalency charts before you test.

AP (Advanced Placement)

Take college-level courses and exams while you are still in high school. AP offers 33 courses across 19 subject areas, with exams given at your high school when each course ends.

AP Equivalencies

CLEP (College Level Examination Program)

Test out of a subject on your own schedule. CLEP covers more than 30 subjects and is offered monthly at more than 1,000 colleges and testing centers. OBU does not grant credit for CLEP General exams.

CLEP Equivalencies

IB (International Baccalaureate)

A two-year curriculum offered by some high schools that leads to a specialized diploma. OBU awards credit for higher-level coursework and exams only.

OBU Advanced Standing and Performance Exams

Take a comprehensive exam for any course OBU offers. Perform at the equivalent of a C or better and you earn passing credit. Pre-register in the Academic Center.

Seal of Biliteracy

Students admitted to OBU with a Seal of Biliteracy qualify for 6 or more hours of college credit in world languages. The seal recognizes intermediate or higher proficiency in two or more languages, including English. If your state does not offer one, you can seek the Global Seal of Biliteracy.
