Shawnee, Oklahoma, is a city of approximately 31,377 people located centrally in Oklahoma, just 35 miles east of Oklahoma City. Shawnee has many amenities, shopping, and restaurants provided by a big city while maintaining a small-town feel. It is part of Pottawatomie County, an area rich in history and home to the Citizen Pottawatomie Nation.
Shawnee enjoys multiple movie theatres, bowling centers, coffee shops, outstanding local and national chain restaurants, numerous national retail establishments, the Shawnee Mall and more.
There are more than 80 churches in and around Shawnee due to the many small communities that are adjacent to the area. There are also several school districts accessible from the Shawnee area including Shawnee Public Schools, Grove School District, Dale School District, North Rock Creek Schools, Bethel School District, and Seminole School District, to name a few. Shawnee is a great place to raise a family and has many places for parents to take their children to play. There are over a dozen parks, a public swimming pool and splash pad, a YMCA, a roller-skating park, a children's Play Space center, two movie theaters, a local mall, and several opportunities to join activities like dancing and youth sports.
Shawnee is near at least 18 lakes, including Shawnee Twin Lakes, that provide many opportunities for family water sports and fishing of every kind. For serious water enthusiasts, it is a short hour's drive to Lake Eufaula, known as one of the state's largest lakes in a town filled with tourist opportunities. In addition to outdoor and water activities, there are numerous museums within less than an hour's drive from Shawnee.
Nearby Oklahoma City boasts the Bricktown entertainment district, featuring great food, minor league baseball, the Bricktown Canal, a 16-screen movie theatre and more. OKC’s Scissortail Park is ranked as one of the best urban parks in the nation. The Paycom Center is home to the Oklahoma City Thunder NBA basketball team and likewise hosts major concerts and world-class entertainment.
