OBU to Host ‘Discover Teaching’ Event for High School Students

High school students interested in exploring a career in education will have the opportunity to experience teaching firsthand at Oklahoma Baptist University’s “Discover Teaching” event on Oct. 27.

The Henry F. McCabe Family School of Education will host the event for students in ninth through 12th grade from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Geiger Center on the OBU campus. The event is free to attendees thanks to funding provided by an Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Teacher Education Grant.

“Discover Teaching” introduces high school students to the field of education through hands-on activities and interactive sessions. Breakout sessions will focus on teaching children of all ages, with topics including art, math, music, reading, science, Spanish, special education and more.

The event will also provide information about financial support opportunities for future educators in Oklahoma, including the Inspired to Teach Scholarship and the TEACH Grant.

This year’s keynote speaker is 2026 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year Kasey Bennett. In addition to speaking to high school attendees, Bennet will provide a special breakout session for accompanying teachers and administrators who bring their students to the event.

Registration and check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Geiger Center, followed by a welcome at 9 a.m. Bus parking is available for schools attending the event.

Dr. Annie Keehn, chair of the OBU School of Education, said the event is designed to inspire the next generation of educators.

“Discover Teaching at OBU is about helping students see the joy and purpose of teaching,” Keehn said. “We want them to imagine the impact they could have on the lives of others, just like their favorite teachers have impacted them.”

Keehn encourages students who are considering a future in teaching to attend.

“If you enjoy working with kids and want to discover how you can shape future generations,” she said, “this event is for you!”
