OBU’s Campus Activities Board to Host Freshman Follies Oct. 30

October 27, 2021

Freshman Follies is coming once again to Bison Hill. This year’s show, hosted by OBU’s Campus Activities Board (CAB), will take place Saturday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m. inside Raley Chapel’s Potter Auditorium. Freshman Follies is an annual talent and variety show led by freshmen that gives new students the opportunity to show off their talents on campus. The event is free and open to the entire OBU community.

In the past, themes for Follies have included “Follie-ing Through the Decades,” “Clueless,” “The ‘Game Show’” and more, but unlike past versions of Freshman Follies, this year’s show doesn’t have a specific theme. Instead, it will consist of a running story that ties all the performances together.

Student Mallory Locke commented on the show and its contents on behalf of CAB.

“We are excited for the theme this year because it’s a little different than usual,” Locke said. “The show will be more of a running story.”

The show will feature scenes outlining the story and songs highlighting the plot. Like all large CAB shows, Freshman Follies will star a stage band, emcees and various talented acts all performing around this year’s central theme: a story about a freshman and Shaz, OBU’s mascot, titled, “Freshman Follies: The Tale of Belshazar.”

Locke provided a general synopsis of the running story providing structure for this year’s Freshman Follies.

“The idea is that there is a tale that if a new freshman makes fun of Ka-Rip during Welcome Week, that when that freshman puts on their beanie, they begin to turn into our mascot, Shaz. The show will begin with telling the tale of the ‘cursed’ beanie and will walk through one of our freshman emcees turning into Shaz.”

This year’s Freshman Follies will be directed by Rayann Williams and Bailee Brown. Emcees include Jordyn Clinton, Madison Hart, Brendan Miller, Christian James, Roman James and Johnie Lee Berry.

Solo acts for this year’s Freshman Follies include Hope Trent, Kamdyn Moody and Amaya Brooks. A girl group called “Girl Bosses” will perform, consisting of Zoe Duck, Sarah Black and Hope Trent.

Between acts, the CAB stage band will entertain the audience while the crew sets up for the next act. This year’s stage band consists of Caleb Dyer, Aiden McCormick, Brock Brown, Brock Currie, Cameron Clark, Chester Brown and Emily Day.

Freshman Follies is free and open to the public. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m.

Freshman Follies will be the second CAB show of the school year, following Biggie, a talent and variety show featuring upperclassmen, which took place in September. Later during the fall semester, CAB will host one of its smaller holiday themed shows, Kerr Christmas, and Lodge of Love will take place in February. The show season will conclude later in the spring with the large CAB show Spring Affair, featuring talent found within the entire OBU student body.
