OBU Music Prep Announces Auditions for Shawnee Honor Choir, Openings for Kindermusik

January 19, 2018

Oklahoma Baptist University’s Music Preparatory Department will conduct auditions for Shawnee Honor Choir, for students in grades 3 to 7, on Jan. 23, from 3 to 4:45 p.m. in OBU’s Raley Chapel room 141. All interested students in grades 3-7 from Shawnee and the surrounding area are invited to audition.

Auditioning students will be asked to sing “Happy Birthday” and are auditioned in order of arrival. The tuition fee is $140 per semester. For additional information about OBU's Music Preparatory Department, visit the Prep Department webpage, call (405) 585-4329 or email prep@okbu.edu.

In its 35th year and continuing its strong tradition, Shawnee Honor Choir is directed by Conchita Hansford. The choir is represented by 17 different schools from Midwest City to Seminole. Each semester the choir performs in six area schools and presents two formal public concerts. The choir meets on Tuesday afternoons from 3:40-5:15 p.m.

The Music Preparatory Department is also now enrolling children in its Kindermusik classes for the spring semester. Classes for babies and for newborns to 18 months meet Mondays at 10 a.m. Two-year-olds meet Mondays at 11 a.m. or Tuesday at 10 a.m. and three-through six-year-old-children meet Wednesdays at 10 or 11 a.m.

Kindermusik fosters the total development of young children through a combination of music and movement. Parents with newborns, toddlers, and three- through six-year-old children can participate in Kindermusik activities such as jingling bells, pounding drums, floating scarves, “hooting” owl sounds and little feet moving in time to music, all providing a valuable learning experience for both the child and the parent or caregiver.

From birth through seven years of age, the child can grow with Kindermusik through encouragement to explore, express and discover, without pressure to perform. As the child progresses through the program, the parent sees an evolutionary development in the child's use of language, attention span, ability to solve problems, social skills and self-esteem.
