Faculty Recital to Feature Piano, Flute, Trombone

Faculty from OBU's Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts will present a recital Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Raley Chapel's Yarborough Auditorium. The community is invited to attend the free performance, which will include Dr. Mary Chung on piano, Dr. Carlos Feller on flute and Dr. Randolph Johnson on bass trombone.

The recital will include works by Ewazen, Faure, Buss, Jolivet, Rowley, Joyce and Haydn, representing 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century musical compositions.

Chung serves as assistant professor of piano at OBU. She began playing piano in South Korea and continued with her studies and graduated from the National Conservatory of Music in the Dominican Republic. She earned a bachelor's degree in piano performance from North Greenville University and a master's degree and doctorate in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Southern Mississippi.

An active soloist and collaborative artist, Chung has performed both nationally and internationally in Canada, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Brazil. Her solo awards include first place in the 11th Luis A. Ferré International Piano Competition in Puerto Rico, winner of the William T. Gower Concerto Competition at the University of Southern Mississippi, finalist in the Concerto Competition at the Brevard Music Festival, alternate winner in Mississippi's MTNA Young Artist Auditions and recipient of the Music Teachers National Association's Student Achievement Recognition Award.

Feller serves as an adjunct instructor of fine arts at OBU. He earned a bachelor's degree from The School of Music and Fine Arts of Paraná, Brazil; a master's degree in flute performance from The University of Southern Mississippi; and a doctorate from The Florida State University. He was a performer and prizewinner in competitions such as the William T. Gower Concerto Competition at USM, the J. Ibert Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, state and regional rounds of the Music Teacher National Association, and the Flute Society of Kentucky Young Artist competition. In 2011, he was selected as one of the participants of the prestigious Young Artist Competition promoted by the National Flute Association.

Playing baroque flute (traverse), Feller is a member of the ensemble Traverso Colore, a chamber group dedicated to historically informed performances on period instruments. Recent performances of the group included the 2011 and 2012 editions of the Florida Flute Convention, and the 2012 National Flute Association Convention. An enthusiast of new music for flute, Feller performed at the International Computer Music Conference in New Orleans, at the International Michel Debost Composition Competition in Curitiba, Brazil, and at the XV Biennial Festival of New Music at Florida State University.

Johnson, an assistant professor of music theory, grew up in Auburn, Ind. His love of music was nurtured at a young age after hearing family members perform together at Christmas and after hearing an organ recital of J.S. Bach's music. At age 12, he began formal studies of trombone, partly due to the influence of his talented trombone-playing older brother, and partly due to the sheer beauty and power of the trombone's tone. He earned a bachelor's degree at Indiana University where he studied under Carl Lenthe. While attending Indiana University, he served as bass trombonist in the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic. He later completed graduate degrees in music theory at Ohio State University, studying under Joe Duchi.

Johnson's performance highlights included regularly substituting as bass trombonist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in Ohio and performing at the 2005 International Trombone Festival in New Orleans as one of three finalists in the Donald Yaxley Bass Trombone Competition. Both instrumental and vocal genres are near to Dr. Johnson's heart: he and his wife, Lia, share a love of opera.
