English Students Receive Awards, Scholarships

OBU's Division of Language and Literature, in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, recognized outstanding students and awarded numerous scholarships during the English Department picnic on May 2.

Bethany Jackson, a sophomore from Benbrook, Texas, received the Lewis and Susan Russell Memorial Scholarship in English. Rayna Dawson, a junior from Harrison, Ark., received the Washichek Scholarship in English, given to a full-time English student who shows outstanding potential. Jordan Godfrey, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., received the Mitchell English Scholarship as well as Scriblerus Creative Writing awards in non-fiction, poetry and fiction.

Matthew Baker, a sophomore from Muskogee, Okla., and Amanda Koszalka, a junior from Independence, Kan., received the Shirley Jones Scholarship in English. Kali Westmoreland, a junior from Hollis, Okla., received the Shakespeare Award, given to the top student in OBU's Shakespeare course. Kayla Mugler, a freshman from Saint Peters, Mo., received the Arthur I. and Margaret Weddell Brandon Scholarship.

Gabriella Bryant, a sophomore from Shawnee, Okla., received the Dr. Katherine Rader Scholarship, given to an outstanding English major with a grade point average of at least 3.0. Kallie Engle, a sophomore from Durant, Okla., received the Alma and Wayne Young Scholarship. Jordan Gilbert, a junior from Chickasha, Okla., received Scrutchins travel funds for his study at Oxford.

Scriblerus Creative Writing Awards also were given to Anna Morgan, a senior from Eatonville, Wash., for non-fiction, and to Addison Eaton, a senior from Madill, Okla., for fiction. Each fall Sigma Tau Delta sponsors a creative writing contest, in which all OBU students may submit poetry or fiction to be judged by OBU faculty and alumni. The result is Scriblerus, OBU's own literary journal, which is consistently acknowledged by the International Society as an outstanding publication.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences provides opportunities for all students to experience art and science as an integral part of a liberal arts education. The curricula of the college offer strong professional programs in literature, behavioral and social sciences, kinesiology and teacher education. The college's diverse courses and performance opportunities enable students to acquire a comprehensive background of educational experiences.
