Bison Baseball Opens with Sweep

Oklahoma Baptist University took a pair of games from Dakota Wesleyan to open the season Saturday, 7-3, 3-1.

Danny Guidry slugged out three hits in his debut as the Bison centerfielder, including a double and a triple.

The Bison broke out on top in the opener with four runs in the first inning. Kip Keith led off with a single and Felix Peguero doubled him home with one out, but was caught trying to take third. Guidry tripled and Nick Bakich walked ahead of Rett Terrell’s RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Bakich scored on a double steal that left Terrell at second and Terrell came home on an Adam Dalby single.

DWU cut it to 4-2 in the top of the second with a passed ball and an RBI single by Brian Pollard.

The Bison got those runs back on an RBI single by Guidry and a sacrifice fly by Terrell in the bottom of the second. OBU got an insurance run in the fourth on an RBI fielders choice by Bakich.

The Tigers scored once in the seventh on a wild pitch.

Tabor Woolard picked up the win for the Bison, going five innings as the starter with six strikeouts and one earned run on four hits. Peguero had two hits to go with Guidry’s three in the Bison’s 11-hit attack.

Lonnie Moody led DWU with two of the team’s seven hits.

Robert Stockton was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs — six earned — on 11 hits in five innings.

In the nightcap, Chris Ryan tossed four innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts and five walks.

The Bison went on top 1-0 in the second inning on an RBI single by Aaron Dickson and doubled the lead in the third when Frank Ibarra doubled and scored on Guidry’s single up the middle.

OBU went up 3-0 in the in the fifth when Bakich singled, moved to second on an Isaac Romero single, took third on a deep fly ball by Eric Curry and stole home.

The Tigers scored an unearned run in the seventh off of Brent Terrell before Chad Rhoades entered to strike out the only batter he faced with a runner on base, giving Rhoades the save.

Ibarra had three hits and Romero two for the Bison, who collected eight for the game.

Jordan Will took the loss for the Tigers.

OBU will play next in Abilene, Texas, Feb. 11-12.
