Duncan, Paloma, to Perform at OBU April 12

Oklahoma Baptist University adjunct art instructor, Gloria Abella De Duncan along with her daughter Vanessa Paloma, a vocalist and medieval harpist, will perform "Seas of Change" April 12 at 7:30 p.m in Yarborough Auditorium at Oklahoma Baptist University.

The mother and daughter duo developed the original performance/exhibition while serving as artist in residence in Herzliya, Israel this fall.

The performance is an exploration of women in the process of exile, migration and displacement. Memory, dream images, personal stories, poetry and song are used in different languages throughout the performance to engage the audience in the experience of migration.

The performance will include music in Hebrew, English, contemporary Spanish and Ladino, which is the Spanish-Jewish language.

"We want the viewers to identify with the feelings expressed through poetry, song and visuals," Duncan said. "I hope we can guide the audience through an empowering journey to discover their sturdiness throughout the changes in their lives."

The performance incorporates poetry by Varda Genossar and Mali Joy Livingstone.

Duncan's artwork was recently displayed locally at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art's exhibit "Oklahoma Visual Arts: A Decade of Excellence."

Her art work is in the collections of museums such as the National Museum of Bogota, Colombia; the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Museum of Art; and Museum of Modern Art, Cali, Colombia.

Paloma, a Los Angeles resident, is a 1993 OBU graduate. She has performed as a soloist throughout the United States, Israel, Asia, and Latin America and has recorded with FOCUS records and National Public Radio. She is co-founder of the musical group Synergy, which performs the work of modern and contemporary composers.
