Senior Andrea Gates Receives OETA Scholarship

Oklahoma Baptist University senior Andrea Gates, from Plano, Texas, is the latest OBU student to be awarded a competitive scholarship from the OETA Foundation.

Gates received one of two $1,000 scholarships following a detailed application process and a comprehensive interview with three OETA executives. The scholarships are awarded annually following a day-long broadcast seminar hosted by OETA and the Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association. The foundation's president, Bob Allen, said all nine competitors were worthy of winning.

"The scholarship is an honor because OETA considered me to be one of the top communication students in the state," Gates said.

Ten OBU students attended the seminar and listened to presentations led by industry professionals. Three faculty members also attended the seminar: Mike Bruce, assistant professor of telecommunications; Dr. David Byland, associate professor of telecommunications; and Dr. Roger Hadley, Communication Arts Division chair and Frank W. and Pauline G. Patterson professor of journalism.

"It demonstrated another aspect of convergence, in that the seminar brought the professional media world together with the academy," Byland said.

Of the 12 professionals who spoke at the seminar, four were former OBU telecommunication graduates: Don Stephens, '93, Doug Farthing '94, Derek Watson, '06, and Christi Mitchell, '09.

"It's gratifying to see that our program is producing industry leaders of today and tomorrow," Hadley said. "When our students succeed, so do we."
