Chapels Feature Stepping Stones Series

Christian life principles will be focal points of Oklahoma Baptist University’s weekly Chapel services this year.

The series of campus worship services will be titled, “Stepping Stones,” based on Richard Foster’s book Celebration of Discipline.

Dale Griffin, OBU’s campus minister, explained the framework of the series during the first Chapel of the fall semester in last August.

“You cannot microwave spiritual growth anymore than you can microwave a relationship. Heat it up too fast, and somebody is going to get burned,” Griffin said, emphasizing a “slow and steady growth” in the area of spiritual disciplines.

He compared the spiritual disciplines to the discipline involved in successful financial management.

“Finances are handled best in a ‘slow cooker’ interest working for you rather than against you

over a long period of time. Proverbs teaches that riches gained too quickly leads actually to poverty,” he said. “Success comes from slow, steady work, thus the word ‘discipline.’”

Displayed in front of Griffin, as he addressed chapel attendees, were granite stones featuring the words Service, Study, Confession, Prayer, Fasting, Simplicity, Celebration, Community, Solitude, Meditation, Teaching, Worship, and Submission.

Different speakers will address the spiritual disciplines throughout the academic year.

Guests are invited to join the OBU community for Chapel at 10 a.m. each Wednesday during the academic year. Additional chapel services are offered on various Mondays and Fridays at 10 a.m.
