Energy & Land Management

The Energy & Land Management Certificate Program is designed for individuals who wish to continue their certification in land management or begin a career in a field related to petroleum or land management endeavors. This certificate program is convenient and scheduled so that you may easily complete the program within a six-month period. If desired, participants may take specific courses to enhance their current working knowledge.

Each course is one or two days in length. New class cycles begin every January and July. When participants have successfully completed the program, they will receive an Energy Land Management Certificate. With the accelerated scheduling, participants can quickly complete the certificate program and then pursue enhanced career opportunities.

All classes meet Monday and/or Tuesday from 8:30–4:30 at the OBU College of Graduate and Professional Studies, 3800 N. May Avenue.

Cost & Registration

ELM Certificate Program course fees are currently $300 for a 1-day course and $600 for a 2-day course. This fee includes all printed materials for each class and lunch. Check with your employer as many companies have paid for their employees to complete a certificate program such as this.

Course fees must be paid before registration is considered complete. Course fees are non-refundable, but can be applied to the registration of another course, if the OBU College of Graduate and Professional Studies is notified 48 hours in advance of a course start. All registrations will be confirmed and classroom / parking information will be sent within 48 hours of each class.


Students will receive individual course completion, as well as program completion, certificates, which can be submitted to professional organizations, that require continuing education credits.

About the Instructor

Dr. Patrick Fitzgerald, Ph.D., Ed.D., J.D. practices law with the firm Fitzgerald & Associates. For many years he has provided significant consulting and taught in many areas related to oil and gas in addition to topics concerning economic and financial decision making in the petroleum industry. Dr. Fitzgerald has an extensive background in publishing and has been a contributor to Landman, a bimonthly publication of the American Association of Professional Landmen.

Patrick W. Fitzgerald, Ph.D., Ed.D., J.D. is an attorney and economist, specializing in oil and gas law and energy finance, with offices in Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado. He has authored, or co-authored, numerous books and articles dealing with petroleum land management including his most recent book Understanding and Negotiating the Oil and Gas Farmout Agreement, published by the AAPL. He is a frequent speaker for NALTA and teaches land management, energy finance and oil and gas law courses for the AAPL and numerous universities throughout the United States.
