The OBU Music Preparatory Department currently offers:

Music Lessons

Private lessons are offered during the fall, spring, and summer sessions in the following areas:*

  • piano
  • voice
  • strings
  • winds
  • brass
  • percussion

Private lessons are offered in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute increments. Fall and spring sessions include 15 private lessons plus a performance opportunity. Summer session includes 6 private lessons plus a performance opportunity. Please click on the side bar for more information about pricing, scheduling, and enrolling in lessons.

Private lessons are scheduled on a day and time that works for you and your instructor and are taught on the OBU campus.

Choirs

Choirs meet once a week on the OBU campus for 15 weeks during the fall and spring sessions and include at least one performance opportunity. Choirs require an audition for entry on the dates listed on our calendar. Auditions are by reservation only. Call 405-585-4329 or email prep@okbu.edu to reserve your audition slot. We currently offer the following vocal ensembles: 

Concert Choir, our most advanced choral ensemble, is by audition only and is for students in grades 8 through 12. This choir studies and performs a wide variety of classical, gospel, folk, and other standard repertoire at a high level while providing outstanding instruction for both male and female voice types. The Concert Choir is under the direction of OBU professor Dr. Louima Lilite and rehearses Tuesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. For more information please contact Dr. Lilite at louima.lilite@okbu.edu or call us at 405-585-4329.

Shawnee Honor Choir is by audition only and is for students in grades 3 through 7. This choir, which is under the direction of Dr. Patty Nelson, has been selected six times to appear at the state convention of the Oklahoma Music Educators Association. In addition to exploring vocal music in one-, two-, and three-part textures, students also have the experience of playing Orff instruments, hand chimes, and rhythm instruments. Group Piano Classes

Piano classes meet once a week on the OBU campus for 15 weeks during the fall and spring sessions. We currently offer the following group piano classes: 

Keyboard Concepts I is an introductory keyboard class for young beginners at the piano taught by OBU professor Dr. Michael Dean and OBU piano pedagogy students. The class progresses through basic musical concepts, including rhythm and note-reading, to playing two-hand solo pieces, all taught in an enjoyable group setting. Each semester students will have the opportunity to participate in OBU's preparatory recitals. The class meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. The cost is $280 for the semester.

Keyboard Concepts II is the second semester continuation of Keyboard Concepts I (students must participate in Keyboard Concepts I to be eligible for participation in Keyboard Concepts II). The class meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. The cost is $280 for the semester.

Group Piano for Adults is a course for students ages 22+ which requires no previous experience at the piano. It offers a fun, collaborative atmosphere to learn how to play the piano. The class, which is taught by OBU adjunct professor Dr. Gloria Tham-Haines, will be held weekly on Tuesdays from 12 to 12:50 p.m. in OBU’s newly renovated Ford Hall Keyboard Lab. It runs 15 weeks. Cost is $280 for the semester.
