The OBU Music Preparatory Department currently offers:

Music Lessons

Private lessons are offered during the fall, spring, and summer sessions in the following areas:*

  • piano
  • voice
  • strings
  • winds
  • brass
  • percussion

Private lessons are offered in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute increments. Fall and spring sessions include 15 private lessons plus a performance opportunity. Summer session includes 6 private lessons plus a performance opportunity. Please click on the side bar for more information about pricing, scheduling, and enrolling in lessons.

Private lessons are scheduled on a day and time that works for you and your instructor and are taught on the OBU campus.

Choirs

Choirs meet once a week on the OBU campus for 15 weeks during the fall and spring sessions and include at least one performance opportunity. Choirs require an audition for entry on the dates listed on our calendar. Auditions are by reservation only. Call 405-585-4329 or email prep@okbu.edu to reserve your audition slot. We currently offer the following vocal ensembles: 

Shawnee Honor Choir is by audition only and is for students in grades 3 through 7 (ages 8-13). This choir, which is under the direction of Dr. Patty Nelson, has been selected six times to appear at the state convention of the Oklahoma Music Educators Association. In addition to exploring vocal music in one-, two-, and three-part textures, students also have the experience of playing Orff instruments, hand chimes, and rhythm instruments. Concert Choir, our most advanced choral ensemble, is by audition only and is for students in grades 7 through 12 (ages 13-18). This choir studies and performs a wide variety of classical, gospel, folk, and other standard repertoire at a high level while providing outstanding instruction for both male and female voice types. The Concert Choir is under the direction of OBU professor Dr. Louima Lilite and rehearses Tuesdays from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. For more information please contact Dr. Lilite at louima.lilite@okbu.edu or call us at 405-585-4329.

Group Piano Classes

Group piano classes meet for weekly, one-hour sessions during the fall and spring semesters. We currently offer the following group piano classes: 

Keyboard Concepts I is a keyboard class for beginners ages 5-6. Students will enjoy learning a new skill in a social group setting! The class progresses from basic musical concepts to two-hand solo pieces. Each semester, students will have the opportunity to participate in OBU's preparatory recitals. The class meets on Mondays at 4 p.m. for 15 weeks. The cost is $280 per semester. Monthly payments are available.

Keyboard Concepts II is the second semester continuation of Keyboard Concepts I (students must complete Keyboard Concepts I to be eligible for participation in II). The class meets on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. for 15 weeks. The cost is $280 per semester. Monthly payments are available.

Group Piano for Adults I is a course for students ages 22+ with no previous experience at the piano. Learn piano in a social, group atmosphere! The class will be held weekly on Thursdays at 11 a.m. in OBU’s newly renovated Ford Hall Keyboard Lab. It runs 7 weeks (Jan. 30 - Mar. 12, 2020). Cost is $140 per 7-week session and may be paid in two monthly installments.

Group Piano for Adults II is the continuation of Group Piano for Adults I (must complete Group Piano for Adults I or have some previous keyboard experience to be eligible for participation in II). This course, for students ages 22+ will be held weekly on Thursdays at 11 a.m. in OBU’s newly renovated Ford Hall Keyboard Lab. It runs 7 weeks (Mar. 26 - May 7, 2020). Cost is $140 per 7-week session and may be paid in two monthly installments.
