Bison Jazz Orchestra

The Bison Jazz Orchestra, an auditioned 20 piece jazz ensemble, is the premiere jazz ensemble of the Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts Division of Music at Oklahoma Baptist University. Directed by Justin Pierce, the Bison Jazz Orchestra performs a wide variety of big band music ranging from music of the swing band era to contemporary big band works.

The ensemble performs regularly across the OBU campus and throughout the Shawnee community. Each semester, the BJO performs a Night of Jazz for the OBU community, which includes swing dancing and a jam session for local musicians. In 2018, the BJO toured and performed in Russia, including the House of Culture in St. Petersburg. Recent guest artists who have performed with the ensemble include Steve Weist, Paul Stephens, Kirk Whalum, Andre Hayward, and Stockton Helbing.

In addition to music majors, members of the Bison Jazz Orchestra are pursuing degrees in a wide variety of majors and disciplines. For more information regarding the Bison Jazz Orchestra, contact Justin Pierce at 405.585.4312 or justin.pierce@okbu.edu.
