In 1936, Harold Cagle ran the 440-yard dash in 46.5 seconds, just two seconds off the world record at the National Intercollegiate Meet in Chicago. He went on to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team and was the lead-off runner on the 1,600-meter relay team which won the silver medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
