November 11, 2010The music of OBU composers, performances by current groups and music from a reunion choir will be featured in a concert titled "Celebrating OBU Composers" on Friday, Nov. 12, at 8:30 p.m. in Raley Chapel's Potter Auditorium. The community is invited to attend the free performance. The program will be led by masters of ceremonies Dr. James Brown, a 1954 OBU alum who served on the faculty from 1964-97, and Rhetta Hudson, who served on the faculty from 1972-2009. The concert will include works by Dr. Michael Cox, a 1970 OBU alum who served on the faculty from 1972-90; Dr. Claude L. Bass, a 1957 alum who served on the faculty from 1965-77; Jack Pearson, a 1959 alum who served on the faculty from 1967-2005; Dr. A.L. "Pete" Butler, a 1955 alum; and Dr. Nancy Cobb Lippens, a 1973 alum who served on the faculty from 1976-2002. It also will include works by Dr. Warren M. Angell, emeritus dean who served from 1936-73; Dr. Rose Marie Cooper, a 1959 alum; and Richard Huggins, a 1969 alum. Featured groups include the Bison Glee Club, directed by Dr. Brent Ballweg, Class of '78, Patterson professor of music and director of choral activities; the Bisonette Glee Club, directed by Dr. James Vernon, professor of music; Alumni Ringers, directed by Mary Kay Parrish, a 1962 alum who served on the faculty from 1964-2002; University Chorale, directed by Ballweg; and a combined ensemble. The event will culminate with the Centennial Anthem, "Grow in Grace," written by Donna Butler Douglas, a 1982 OBU graduate. Orchestration for the anthem was provided by Dr. C.L. Bass, a 1957 OBU graduate who also served as an OBU faculty member for 12 years. "The Centennial Anthem is a lovely and creative use of a historic prayer given by W.P. Blake, the first chairman of OBU's board of trustees," said John Parrish, chairman of OBU's Centennial Committee and executive vice president emeritus. "The prayer was historic in that Blake and G. Lee Phelps came to the campus shortly after the school site had been determined and prayed for God's blessings on this important endeavor. "Donna Butler Douglas' composition is faithful to Blake's original prayer and will stir the hearts of those who know OBU history and the road our Baptist forefathers traveled to bring the school to this point."
