The Bison Glee Club and Bisonette Glee Club, two of OBU’s premier choral groups, will sing in Oklahoma churches on Sunday, March 11. The public is invited to attend the free performances.
The Bison Glee Club will sing at Metropolitan Baptist Church, located at 7201 West Britton Road in Oklahoma City, during the 8:30 a.m. worship service. The group will sing at Cherokee Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, located at 5700 NW 63rd Street, during the 10:45 a.m. worship service.
The Bison Glee Club will sing at University Heights Baptist Church in Stillwater, Okla., during the 6 p.m. worship service. The church is located at 323 South Knoblock.
The Bisonettes will sing at First Baptist Church in Stillwater during the 7 p.m. worship service. The church is located at 701 S. Duncan.
An auditioned group of some of OBU’s finest male musicians, the Bison Glee Club has toured extensively through the United States as well as in Canada, Europe and the Far East. The premiere ensemble has been featured as an honor choir for the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference and the Oklahoma Music Educators Convention.
The Bison Glee Club is directed by Dr. Brent Ballweg, director of choral activities. Ballweg is the Burton H. Patterson professor of music in the Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts at OBU. He received a bachelor’s degree from OBU and a master’s degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He earned his doctorate at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Ballweg is an active guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator for various festivals, music contests and workshops across the country.
The Bisonettes include some of the finest vocal musicians on the OBU campus. The all-female group was organized in 1954 by Warren M. Angell, then dean of the College of Fine Arts. Members are selected by audition and represent a number of academic areas of the University. The group performs at many churches, schools, and campus events, as well as staging tours throughout the country.
The Bisonette Glee Club is conducted by James Vernon, professor of music. Vernon has served OBU since 1990 as an instructor in choral music, music theory and music composition. He also served the OBU Division of Music as Chairman from 2000-09. Vernon earned degrees from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
