Symphonic Winds to Present Concert March 1

The OBU Symphonic Winds will present a concert featuring guest artists and repertoire from the spring semester on Thursday, March 1, at 7.30 p.m. in Raley Chapel’s Potter Auditorium on the OBU campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

The program will feature material by composers including Sergei Prokofiev, Lo Presti, Reed, Persechetti and John Mackey. Featured soloists will be Brandon Brady on alto saxophone and John J. Slish on djembe. Brady is an adjunct professor of saxophone for the OBU Division of Music. Slish is the Shawnee Middle School band director and a percussion instructor at Shawnee High School.

“This concert has some literature that has really challenged us intellectually,” said Mason Phillips, a junior band member from Yukon, Okla., who said the band has worked diligently alongside the guest soloists. “We have a great conductor who always brings such incredible material to us.”

Dr. Lauren Denney Wright, assistant professor of music, is the conductor of the Symphonic Winds. At OBU, Denney Wright also teaches advanced conducting, marching band techniques, wind band literature and woodwind methods to music education majors. She is the clarinet instructor and conducts the clarinet choir.

A native of Marietta, Ga., Denney Wright earned a bachelor’s degree in clarinet performance from Vanderbilt University, a master’s degree in clarinet performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a bachelor’s degree in music education from Kennesaw State University. Prior to her appointment at Oklahoma Baptist University, she completed her doctoral studies in instrumental conducting at the University of Miami Frost School of Music.
