Eight Students Featured In Annual Concerto-Aria Concert
February 8, 2012
OBU’s 38th annual Concerto-Aria Concert will feature the musical gifts of eight students who will perform with a full orchestra Sunday, Feb. 19. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Raley Chapel’s Potter Auditorium. The public is invited to attend the free event.
Student soloists are selected by audition. This year’s concert will feature three OBU vocalists: Andrew Harper, a senior from Olympia Wash.; Ashlynn Streck, a junior from Hennessey, Okla.; and Elizabeth Youngblood, a junior from Midwest City, Okla.
Three OBU instrumentalists also will be featured: Tabitha Gordon, a junior from Burleson, Texas, on saxophone; Andre Jones, a senior from Lawton, Okla., on flute; and Holly Lackey, a freshman from Decatur, Texas, on piano.
Also selected by audition is a new composition by Graham Jones, a sophomore from Arlington, Texas. This work, “March of the Vulsutyrim,” will be premiered during the concert.
OBU’s Division of Music also hosted a Concerto-Aria Concert competition for high school seniors -– with a prize including a $4,000 scholarship and a $500 cash award –- on Dec. 10. Graeson Griffin, a home school senior from Shawnee, Okla., won the competition and earned an opportunity to perform on piano with an orchestra during the Feb. 19 concert. This is the second year OBU hosted a competition for high school students.
The conductor of the concert is James Vernon, professor of music at OBU. Vernon teaches courses in music composition, music theory and fine arts. He also serves as musical director of the Bisonettes, OBU’s Women’s Glee Club.
A pre-concert lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in Raley Chapel room 203E. OBU music students will introduce the selections to be performed during the concert along with background information to assist the audience in listening to the event.
Following the concert, a reception in the Geiger Center will honor the soloists.
