28th Annual Pops Concert to be ‘Out of This World’
October 6, 2011
The OBU Symphonic Winds and Bison Jazz Orchestra will present the 28th annual Pops Concert on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Raley Chapel’s Potter Auditorium.
“The theme for this year’s concert is ‘Out of This World,’” said Dr. Lauren Denney Wright, OBU director of bands. “It is very exciting to be performing music based upon this year’s theme. The students have worked hard and are looking forward to the concert.”
The Symphonic Winds will be performing selections including “Star Wars Medley,” “Gandalf” and “Also Sprach Zarathustra.”
The Bison Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dr. Kevin Pruiett, will perform big band selections by jazz greats Count Basie, Duke Ellington as well as the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra.
“With this year’s selections, the Bison Jazz Orchestra has put a bit of a spin on the theme of the concert,” Pruiett said. “Charts like ‘Big Dipper’ and ‘Twilight Zone’ will be played along with standards such as ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ and ‘Stardust.’ We are definitely taking some liberty with the theme; however, it should make for an interesting performance.”
The Bison Jazz Orchestra’s portion of the concert will also feature vocalist Karlie Clifford, and soloists Fernando Castro, Spencer Davis, Randy Goodnight and Tabitha Wasik. Clifford is from Oklahoma City; Castro is from Vila Velha, Brazil; Davis is from Pine Bluff, Ark.; Goodnight is from Tecumseh, Okla.; and Wasik is from Crowley, Texas.
Dr. Dan Reeder, OBU Geiger professor of finance, will once again serve as the master of ceremonies.
“We are excited to have Dan back as the Emcee this year,” Pruitt said. “His sense of humor and personality make him a great addition to the program.”
The Shawnee community is invited to attend the fun-filled, family friendly concert. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and children, and free for children under age 2. As in the past, each ticket comes with a bag of candy.
“It is a great family event and a wonderful opportunity for OBU students and the community to enjoy great music in a relaxed environment,” Denney Wright said.
Tickets are available in the Fine Arts Office in Raley Chapel and will also be sold at the door. Group rates are available. For more information, call (405) 878-2307.
