The University Chorale of OBU will perform its spring concert on Tuesday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Raley Chapel’s Yarborough Auditorium. The public is invited to attend the free performance.
Since its founding in 1963, the University Chorale has been OBU’s premiere mixed ensemble. Comprised of some of OBU’s finest singers selected by audition, Chorale’s purpose remains the same as it was in its earliest days: “to present advanced choral literature to the OBU campus and community.”
The spring concert will commence with “Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above” by Nancy Hill Cobb Lippens, a 1973 OBU graduate and professor of music from 1976-2002. Following will be “Gloria in excelsis” by Wenzel Müller, with OBU senior Greg Spena as conductor and featuring Micah Reinhart, Ashlynn Streck, Jonathan Hamrick and Casey Flynt as soloists.
The concert will include “Jesus, My Lord, My Life, My All” by Bob Burroughs; “Be Thou My Vision” by Edwin T. Childs, featuring Courtney Bryant as soloist; and “According to Thy Wisdom” by Daniel E. Gawthrop. It also will include “Sing Unto God” by Paul Fetler; “Saints Bound for Heaven” as arranged by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw; and “Use Me, Lord” by Byron J. Smith, featuring Sarah Graham as soloist and Andrew Harper as pianist.
Following a brief interlude, the concert will continue with “Come to Me, My Love” by Norman Dello Joio; “Dieu! Qu’il la fait bon regarder,” from “Trois Chansons,” by Claude Debussy; and “Walking on the Green Grass” by Michael Hennagin. It also will include selections from “Liebeslieder Walzer, Opus 52” by Johannes Brahms; and “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love,” from “Liebeslieder Polkas,” by P.D.Q. Bach and Schickele, with Keith Whitmore and Brenden Laughlin as pianists.
The concert will conclude with “E’en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come,” by Paul Manz.
The 25-member University Chorale is directed by Dr. Brent Ballweg, who also serves as director of choral activities at OBU. He received his bachelor’s degree at OBU and his master’s degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He earned his doctorate at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
