Music Preparatory Choirs to Present Spring Concert

The Music Preparatory Department Choirs (Young Singers of Central Oklahoma) of the Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts at OBU will present a spring concert on Sunday, April 17, at 3 p.m. in Yarborough Auditorium of Raley Chapel. More than 80 children will be featured in the program that spotlights the Discovery Singers, Shawnee Honor Choir and the Concert Choir. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Discovery Singers will open the program. They are led under the direction of Dr. Casey Gerber, assistant professor of music education and coordinator of vocal music education at OBU. The choir is open to any student beginning first grade and focuses on building vocal technique and music literacy, providing a great place for young children to begin their musical experience. Dana Ward serves as student accompanist

In its 29th year, Shawnee Honor Choir is an auditioned group of third- through seventh-grade students from Shawnee and the surrounding area. The choir is directed by Conchita Hansford, director of the OBU Preparatory Department and assistant professor of music at OBU. Students in the Shawnee Honor Choir represent 16 different schools from Midwest City to Seminole. The children study and perform a wide variety of music ranging from simple unison songs to the more challenging two- and three-part choral treble literature. The playing of Orff instruments, hand chimes and rhythm instruments is also an enjoyable aspect of the choir experience. The choir performs annually in 12 area schools and presents two formal public concerts. In her fourth year, Dephanie Lilite serves the choir as accompanist. OBU students Ashlyn Streck and Dana Ward serve as student assistants.

The Concert Choir, also under the direction of Gerber, is an auditioned treble choir of eighth- through 12th-grade students in and around Shawnee. The Concert Choir provides singing experiences that increase individual musicianship and enhance personal growth and development. The choir is dedicated to the philosophy that the performance of quality choral literature can provide a source of great joy and enrichment for the individual and for the community, and it also serves as a laboratory choir for OBU music education majors. The choir performs two formal public concerts at OBU during the year, as well as performances at Sterling House, a local assisted living facility. OBU music education majors Dana Ward and Meg Sandridge assist with the choir.

Interested children may audition for Shawnee Honor Choir (third through seventh graders), Discover Singers (first through third graders) or Concert Singers (eighth through 12th graders) on Tuesday, May 3, from 3-5 p.m. in Raley Chapel, room 141. Returning Shawnee Honor Choir students may re-audition on April 26 or May 3.
