David’s Creed Band Focuses on True Worship

For more than four years, the OBU band David's Creed has served many churches with its unique style of leading worship. Combining traditional hymns with a contemporary approach has allowed David's Creed to appeal to a variety of audiences. The band is comprised of some of OBU's finest musicians and vocalists. Ranging from philosophy to education majors, these students are dedicated to sharing Christ through their gifts of music.

The band's name is derived from Scripture in Acts 13:22. The passage describes David's dedication to God's will, and how he sought after God's heart. The motivation has become a driving force behind the operation of the band. The members of the band also focus on the true meaning of worship.

Members of OBU's worship band, David's Creed, practice in Raley Chapel on Monday, Feb. 21. Band members include (from left) Jonathan Hamrick, Sarah Graham, Sean Muzljakovich, Courtney Tice, Lucas Simmons, Jared Huckabee, Parker Jackson and (on piano) Karlie Clifford.

"My definition of true worship is giving my best to God in every aspect of my life, whether by music or giving," said Dr. Casey Gerber, the band's director. Gerber is assistant professor of music education at OBU and serves as coordinator of vocal music education.

"My definition of true worship is praising God for all that He is and all that He has done," said vocalist Sarah Graham, a senior from Ponca City, Okla.

The band's purpose is to reach out to local churches and strengthen OBU's relationship with the community. The contemporary style of David's Creed allows the band to reach larger audiences, Gerber said. The band has performed all over Oklahoma and in Texas and Missouri.

"David's Creed is an opportunity for OBU to recruit students from local churches, answering questions from perspective students and sharing personal stories about how God has used us at this university," Graham said.

Several of the members of David's Creed use their musical abilities in their home churches; however, the members of David's Creed are not necessarily settled on the idea of pursing a professional contemporary music career, Gerber said. For now, they focus on leading worship across on the OBU campus and across the region.

The members of the band include: Graham on vocals; Courtney Tice, a senior voice major from Oologah, Okla., on vocals; Karlie Clifford, a sophomore education major from Oklahoma City on keyboard; Parker Jackson, a senior religion major from Ozark, Mo., on bass; Jared Huckabee, a junior interdisciplinary major from Rockwall, Texas, on drums; Jonathan Hamrick, a senior music theory major from Cedar Crest, N.M., on the electric guitar; Lucas Simmons, a junior English major from Weleetka, Okla., on the acoustic guitar; Chance Ballard, a senior philosophy major from Lawton, Okla., as the band's sound technician, and Sean Muzljakovich, a junior worship arts major from Bartlesville, Okla.
