OBU Announces Two New Athletics Posts

Taking the next step in adding four varsity sports teams, Oklahoma Baptist University has posted job notices for two new positions within the athletics program.

Applications are now being accepted for a varsity men's and women's swimming coach, and for an assistant athletics director for new sports implementation and football operations.

"These two posts are critical to a successful process for expanding the sports programs," said Randy Smith, OBU executive vice president for business and administrative services.

Swimming teams will be added for the 2011-12 academic year. The teams' first competitive action will be this coming fall semester.

"To meet our timetable for implementing swimming programs, we are planning to name a coach for the men's and women's teams early in the spring semester," said Dr. Norris M. Russell, OBU athletics director.

"The coach will need to dive right in and evaluate the pool of student-athletes who can help form our initial squad," Russell said.

The assistant athletic director will be tasked with coordinating implementation of the swimming program, as well as the creation of a women's lacrosse team and the resumption of Bison football. OBU fielded a football team for more than two decades before shutting down the program in December 1940.

"We are seeking a person with experience in athletics who understands both the complexities and the opportunities varsity sports offer," Russell said. "This individual also will have oversight of our football operations."

"Our decision to return to the gridiron includes a commitment to build a successful football program while not hindering other existing varsity programs," Smith said. "Having an administrator tasked with coordinating the football operations and new sports implementation allows us to continue our administrative commitment to existing teams.
