Continuing a Bison Hill Christmas tradition, OBU's German Club, Delta Delta Phi, will host its annual German Christmas worship service at 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 10, in Stubblefield Chapel on the OBU campus. The Shawnee-area community is invited to attend the family-friendly event.
The program will consist of prayers, Bible readings and the singing of Christmas carols, all in German. Programs and song sheets will be furnished for all who attend. A special poem recitation and duet by two area children is a new element for this year's service.
OBU German students will read Bible verses concerning the birth of Christ and a Christmas poem. Dr. David E. Nagle, assistant professor of German and minister at Hominy Friends Meeting, will lead the worship service.
Rosemarie Lones, professor emerita of German, started the tradition during her tenure on Bison Hill. The worship service gives the German club an opportunity to showcase their skills and reach out to the OBU community, Nagle said.
Nagle was part of a similar tradition while teaching at a public high school in Missouri, and he said he knew this opportunity would be well-received on a college campus.
"Members of the Shawnee community who speak German appreciate an opportunity to worship in the language," Nagle said. Also, those who don't speak German "often enjoy being immersed in a different cultural experience and find it valuable for their kids, as well."
