Area Students Chosen to Perform at OMTA Convention

The Oklahoma Music Teachers' Association Junior Piano Auditions were held Oct. 30 on the OBU campus. Four area piano students were selected to perform in the Winners' Recitals at the OMTA East District Convention on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at OBU. Twenty-one students from the Shawnee area in grades three through eight participated in the festival. Event winners included:
Third and Fourth Grade Division: Emily Brown, daughter of John and Andrea Brown. Alternate is Tommy Keller, son of Tom and Patty Keller. Honorable mention is Anna Sampson, daughter of Jay and Amy Sampson.
Fifth and Sixth Grade Division: Ethan Schaffer, son of Bryce and Colette Schaffer of Lindsay, Okla., and Erin Presley, daughter of Heidi and Mike Presley. First alternate is Caleb Richards, son of Jeff and Cheri Richards. Second alternate is Emma Sampson, daughter of Jay and Amy Sampson. Honorable mention is Evie Griffin, daughter of Dale and Donna Griffin.
Seventh and Eighth Grade Division: Mitchell Manlapig, son of Mike and Janna Manlapig. Alternate is Graham Griffin, son of Dale and Donna Griffin. Honorable Mention is Beth Brasher, daughter of William and Phyllis Brasher.
Emily Brown, Tommy Keller, Erin Presley, Mitchell Manlapig, Anna Sampson and Emma Sampson are from the studio of Kaye Shields. Evie Griffin and Graham Griffin are Jeannie Tyler's students. Ethan Schaffer is a student of Jonette Hinkle. Caleb Richards and Beth Brasher are students of Conchita Hansford.
Jennifer Tripi served as the adjudicator for the audition. Tripi received her bachelor's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Shorter College in Rome, Ga. She currently teaches group and applied piano at the University of Oklahoma. Outside of the university, she teaches applied lessons at the Fine Arts Academy at First Baptist Church in Norman, Okla., leads a weekly Kindermusik class and serves as the accompanist at Bridgeview United Methodist Church in Norman. She plans to graduate with a master's degree in piano pedagogy from OU in May 2011.
Conchita Hansford, OBU Music Preparatory director and assistant professor of music, served as coordinator of the Junior Piano Auditions.
