OBU has named alumnus Dr. Wendell Lang director of church relations, Dale Griffin, dean of spiritual life, recently announced. Lang, senior pastor of Surrey Hills Baptist Church in Yukon, Okla., is serving on the OBU team in a bi-vocational role.
“Wendell will have a unique ability to hear and understand the heart of pastors and their desire to see OBU succeed,” Griffin said. “As a long-time pastor who has successfully seen many of his young people attend OBU, including his daughter, Wendell will be able to communicate the mission of the university and the president’s vision, while listening with the attentive ear of a pastor.”
Griffin said in the church relations role, Lang will provide leadership in determining churches, associations and other key Baptist relationships that could benefit from the mission and vision of OBU through personal contacts and shared service.

In denominational service, Lang served on the board of the North American Mission Board from 2009-10 and 1994-98; on the board of trustees for Tennessee Baptist Convention, 2006-10; on the Union University board of regents, 2006-10; as president of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma in 2000; on OBU’s board of trustees, 1991, 1993 and 1998-2004; on the board of trustees for the Southern Baptist Convention Annuity Board, 1998-2004; and on several committees through the BGCO and the SBC. He served on the BGCO board of directors in 1987. He taught as an adjunct professor through OBU’s Ministry Training Institute in 1986 and 1991.
Lang has also been actively involved in associational Baptist service, Christian-based writing projects, church extension ministries and civic service.
“When you see Wendell throughout the state, welcome him back to Oklahoma,” Griffin said. “We are thrilled to have him back on Bison Hill. You can expect Wendell will help you find reasons to return to Bison Hill as well.”
