Pedalers Invited for 10th Annual Bison Bicycle Classic

Bicycling enthusiasts are invited to register for the 10th annual Bison Bicycle Classic non-sanctioned race and tour, slated for Saturday, Sept. 25, at 9 a.m.

The Bison Bicycle Classic will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 25. Bicycling enthusiasts are invited to register for the non-sanctioned race and tour. All who register by Wednesday, Sept. 15, will be guaranteed a T-shirt.

The event, which began as the Bison Bicycle Tour 10 years ago, has grown from a small local ride to a regional race attracting about 200 participants each year. The Bison Bicycle Classic is sponsored by the OBU Division of Music, the Pott County Pedalers racing team and the Greater Shawnee Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. All proceeds for the event go to Habitat for Humanity.

This year’s Bison Bicycle Classic will include a 50-mile timed non-sanctioned race, a 50-mile tour, a 25-mile tour, and two categories of children’s rides/parade. The race will be on a separate course from the tours and kids’ rides. Pedalers will depart at 9 a.m. in front of OBU’s Recreation and Wellness Center (RAWC) on University Drive. Registration and packet pick-up opens at 7:30 a.m. in the RAWC.

Lunch will be provided for all participants upon their return to the RAWC.

Especially for children, Extreme Inflatables will provide fun activities and Larry Smith, owner of the Bicycle Shoppe in Shawnee, will check children’s bicycles and provide bicycling safety tips. The children will have a short ride through the OBU campus and can enjoy the inflatable and pizza at the end of the ride. The children’s event will begin at 10 a.m., and the inflatable will close at noon. The cost is $10 for the children’s event. They must register before Sept. 15 to receive a T-shirt.

Sponsors for the 2010 event include: The Bicycle Shoppe, Aramark, The Christian Motorcycle Club, the City of Shawnee, McAlister’s Deli, Michael Cappo Farmer’s Insurance, Precision Physical Therapy, Tony Fitzgerald Engraving, Unity Hospital, Webber’s Graphics and Country Cottage Primitive Lavender Farm.
