Theatre enthusiasts in central Oklahoma are invited to attend a brown bag luncheon lecture titled “From Page to Stage,” hosted by professional actor and screenwriter Christy Hall, Friday, Sept. 3, at noon in Sarkeys Theatre. Attendees should bring their own lunch for the event.
Hall, who graduated in 2004, will portray Isabel in her award-winning play “Yours, Isabel” in an exclusive regional release at OBU Thursday, Sept. 2, and Friday, Sept. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Craig-Dorland Theatre in Shawnee Hall. Hall’s husband, actor Matt Lutz, will portray Nick. OBU alum Rex Daugherty, a 2005 graduate, will direct.
“The purpose of the lunch is to provide an opportunity to hear directly from the playwright how the process of the play evolved,” said Dr. Joyce Spivey Aldridge, associate professor of theatre. “It is a fascinating story that is unique to each written play. The idea of the play came from letters written between two young people in the early stages of the second World War.”
Aldridge, who did dramaturg work for “Yours, Isabel” in collaboration with her former students, said Hall had access to information provided by the daughter of the young lovers. The daughter was curious as to whether the information might be theatrically interesting. As an emerging playwright in New York City, Hall began to explore how to create the story form.
“It is amazing to see how a limited description of an experience written in a letter was transformed into an event for an audience to witness firsthand,” Aldridge said. “Attending the lunch will allow the guests to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the play they will have the opportunity to see Sept. 2 or Sept. 3.”
Tickets for the OBU production of “Yours, Isabel” will be $6 per person. All seats will be general admission. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door. The box office will open at 6:30 p.m.
Advance tickets are available at the OBU Theatre Department in Sarkeys Telecommunication Center on campus, or by calling (405) 878-2347.
