McGowan Named BCA President-Elect

Julie McGowan, news and media relations director at Oklahoma Baptist University, was recently elected as president-elect for Baptist Communicators Association during the BCA 2010 Workshop in Chicago. She will become president of the professional development association for Baptist communicators in April 2011.

A native of Boise City, Okla., McGowan earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from OBU in 1995. She previously worked as a staff writer at Word & Way Baptist news journal in Jefferson City, Mo.; as associate director of editorial services and managing editor of The Commission magazine at the International Mission Board in Richmond, Va., and as director of communications at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Glen Allen, Va.

McGowan served as chair of the BCA's 2010 Wilmer C. Fields Awards competition, facilitating 19 judges to evaluate 366 entries in categories including public relations campaigns, interactive communications, audio-visual communications, news and feature writing, photography and graphic design. The competition is named for Wilmer C. Fields, chief public relations officer for the SBC Executive Committee from 1959-87 who nurtured the growth of the association. The Wilmer C. Fields Awards have been presented since 1964.

Baptist Communicators Association was organized in 1953 as the Baptist Public Relations Association, now called Baptist Communicators Association. Most of the association's approximately 300 members represent Southern Baptist agencies such as the International Mission Board, North American Mission Board, LifeWay Christian Resources and Woman's Missionary Union; state conventions; Baptist newspapers; and Baptist universities.

The organization's main mission is to assist Baptist communications personnel in gaining professional growth and fulfillment. Members share useful ideas which enable their peers to accomplish effective communications planning and achieve superior results. The group also provides a reinforcing fellowship for members and gives recognition for outstanding professional achievement. BCA offers a newsletter and placement registry, as well as the annual workshop and awards competition.
