Oklahoma Baptist University's Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts has named Dr. Peter Purin as assistant professor of music. He will begin his tenure at OBU for the fall 2010 semester.
Purin earned a bachelor's degree in music theory and composition, graduating with the scholastic predicate magna cum laude, from Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill. He earned a master's degree in music theory from The University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He earned his doctorate in music theory from The University of Kansas in Lawrence. His dissertation was titled "Musical Style in the Musical Theatre Works of Stephen Sondheim."
He served as a graduate student section instructor for "Music Theory" I and II and "Introduction to Music Technology" at the University of Kansas, as well as a graduate teaching assistant for the faculty of "Music Theory IV." Purin also served as a teaching assistant section instructor for Music Theory, sections I, II, III and IV, at The University of Minnesota, as well as a teaching assistant for "Music and Movies" and a graduate student section instructor for "Music Fundamentals for Non-Majors."
Purin has published several articles including "An Examination of Don Walker's Orchestration Style in The Pajama Game, The Most Happy Fella, and The Music Man" in the American Music Research Center Journal; "Review: The Sound of Broadway Music by Stephen Suskin" and "Review: Directors and the New Musical Drama by Miranda Lundskaer-Nielsen" both published in Studies in Musical Theatre. He has made presentations at the local, regional and national level.
He is a member of the Society for Music Theory, Music Theory Midwest, Society for American Music, American Musicological Society Midwest, Rocky Mountain Society of Music Theory, College Music Society and Composers Guild at the University of Kansas.
