Baptists across the state will have the opportunity to celebrate a century of shared ministry with Oklahoma Baptist University during OBU Day in the Churches events Feb. 28 and March 7. Churches are asked to include an OBU element in their Sunday services, giving congregations updates about the university's students and programs.
Oklahoma Baptist pioneers founded OBU in 1910 to equip future Christian leaders for a new state. Churches in the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma have supported OBU for 100 years.
"It is an honor and a privilege for OBU to celebrate her 100th birthday with the very churches that birthed the Bison legacy in 1910," said Odus Compton, OBU director of church relations. "We look forward to hearing the shared testimony of this celebration as it reverberates across the state the last Sunday of February and the first Sunday of March. The only thing that would make it better would be for all 1,700-plus churches to be in same place at the same time."
During OBU Day, churches can participate in a variety of ways. Because this is a simultaneous statewide celebration, churches are asked to identify OBU students, alumni, parents or friends in their communities to lead their congregations' celebrations.
Churches have several options about how to emphasize OBU Day in their local congregation, including use a three-minute OBU Day video which highlights the university's mission; distribute free OBU Day bulletin inserts; distribute free OBU Quick Facts mini-brochures; have a member of the church or a guest share in a worship service by preaching, sharing a testimony, leading in music, or providing special music; or host a special Sunday School or discipleship training session regarding college choices.
