Spirit Assembly Set to Cheer OBU Basketball Teams

Oklahoma Baptist University students, fans, faculty and alumni will meet Wed., Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. in the Noble Complex to see both the Bison and Lady Bison basketball teams in action and to express their spirit for the upcoming Homecoming doubleheader and basketball season.

The event will begin with the Lady Bison basketball team going through warm-ups, followed with words from Lady Bison Head Coach John McCullough. The team may present drills or possibly play a short scrimmage, said Norris Russell, OBU's director of athletics.

The OBU Bison cheerleaders will be introduced and will perform their homecoming routine. Harvest Court candidates also will be introduced during the Spirit Assembly.

The Bison basketball team will make an appearance, followed by comments from Bison Head Coach Doug Tolin. The Bison also will present team drills or a scrimmage.

Campus Minister Dale Griffin will conclude the Spirit Assembly by speaking to students about the "Champions of Character" program.

"Spirit Assembly provides an opportunity for the university community to celebrate and honor student athletes, who dedicate many hours to physical training and academics, and their coaches, who continue to lead with excellence," Griffin said.

The Bison finished a successful 23-10 season in 2007-08, advancing to the quarterfinals of the national NAIA tournament. The Bison recently were ranked 5th in the nation by "Sporting News" and are picked to be in the mix for the Sooner Athletic Conference championship.

The Lady Bison had a successful 2007-08 campaign as well, during which they went 29-5, finished as runners-up in the SAC tournament, and earned a bid to the NAIA national Tournament.

Bison basketball begins Saturday, Nov. 1, at 3 p.m. versus Manhattan Christian College in the Noble Complex. The Homecoming doubleheader is Saturday, Nov. 8, with the Lady Bison launching their season at 1:30 p.m. versus Evangel University, and the Bison playing at 3:30 p.m. versus Grace University.
