Oklahoma Baptist University will offer a series of workshops Sunday, Nov. 2, and Monday, Nov. 3, to assist students in the applying for the Gates Millennium Scholarship. Established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Gates Millennium Scholarship is a fully-funded and renewable scholarship offered to assist minority students desiring to attend college.
Former Gates scholar and recent OBU graduate Michael Bell will lead the workshops, which will include individual help in understanding and completing the application materials. Bell also will share the benefits of being a scholarship recipient.
"The Gates Millennium Scholarship Program was created to reward outstanding ethnic students for their high school work," said Bruce Perkins, director of admissions at OBU. "Though the application process is somewhat extensive, it is worth it to the recipient who will receive a full-ride scholarship renewable for four years, providing the minimum grade point average is maintained. The workshop is designed to help potential scholarship candidates learn more about the program and understand the application process. It is a time for both inspiration and information."
The Gates Millennium Scholarship was founded in 1999 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Bill Gates, founder of the computer software company Microsoft, and his wife, Melinda, plan to help more than 27,000 low-income and minority students attend college by the year 2016. The OBU Gates Millennium Scholarship workshops will take place Sunday, Nov. 2, from 3-4 p.m. in the parlor at Glorieta Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, and Monday, Nov. 3, from 9-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Lab 203 in the Bailey Business Center on the OBU campus. The workshop is free.
