Oklahoma Baptist University's Legacy Society will host its annual fall meeting Wednesday, Oct. 29, at The Zarrow Campus in Tulsa. The meeting provides an experience to study the cultural impact of Judaism on law, a Bible study examining ethics and faith through a Bible study, discussions, a kosher luncheon and a tour of the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art.
"The Legacy Society is an effort to create a forum for people who have an interest in the future of OBU," said John Little, OBU's director of estate and gift planning.
OBU alumnus Dr. C. Mack Roark, who retired as the Dickinson Professor of Bible at OBU's Joe L. Ingram School of Christian Service, will lead the Bible study to open the event, which begins at 10 a.m. Roark will lay the groundwork for the day's discussion by reflecting on the Jewish heritage of the Christian faith.
"Many of the things Christ taught us are rooted in the Jewish life," Little said. "We will get a change to see the cultural background of our faith and how that history is worked out today."
Joel Hefley, an OBU alum and former Republican Congressman from Colorado's Fifth District, will offer practical examples about the challenges of living the ethical Christian life in the political arena. Jack Zanerhaft, a Tulsa defense attorney who is also a Jewish rabbi, will present the Jewish experience of faith and law in practical and entertaining terms. Steve Lewis, an OBU alum and former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma, will provide insight into the political and legal processes in light of faith.
Attendees will be invited to view two special exhibits at the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art: "Swed Silver," which includes contemporary forms of Jewish ritual silver; and "The Book of Genesis in the Art of Samuel Bak," known for its rich color palette and use of metaphors.
The cost for the event is $20. Reservations are due by Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. To register, or for more information, call Nola Dobyns in the OBU Development Office at (405) 878-2703. The Zarrow Campus is located at 2021 E. 71st Street in Tulsa.
