Pridmore Performs Guest Recital at OBU
October 6, 2008
Renowned soprano vocal artist Helen Pridmore will make her first appearance at Oklahoma Baptist University to perform during the seventh annual Vocal Honors Academy on Thursday Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in OBU's Raley Chapel. The public is invited to attend this free event.
The Vocal Honors Academy is a two-day event, Oct. 9-10, for outstanding students from select Oklahoma high school choral programs. The academy aims to develop and polish the talent and skills of young singers as well as provide private lessons with college professors, a guest artist recital, performance technique classes, and a choral rehearsal visit.
This year's guest performer, Pridmore, will perform pieces by Tim Brady, Cathy Berberian and John Cage, as well as an improvisational piece. She will be accompanied by Keith Whitmore, OBU's staff accompanist. Pridmore will also teach two classes during the Vocal Honors Academy.
"We try to do something different each year, as many of our student participants attend multiple times," said Dr. Mark McQuade, assistant professor of music. "Canadian soprano, Dr. Helen Pridmore is a highly respected interpreter of 20th-Century and Modern music."
Pridmore has performed in a variety of venues including the Banff Centre in Alberta the Sound Symposium in Newfoundland, and locations throughout Maritimes, Québec and the U.S.
"She has an international performance career, and we know she will offer the Vocal Honors Academy students, our OBU students, and the OBU/Shawnee community a unique perspective into music that might be somewhat ‘foreign' to them," McQuade said.
Pridmore is a member of the Motion Ensemble, New Brunswick's new music group. The Motion Ensemble's performances include scored music, improvisation, and interactive electronic and visual media.
Pridmore studied vocals and piano in the US and Canada and received her doctorate at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. She currently teaches at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada.
