Scottish Professor To Speak On Campus

Dr. David Bebbington spoke at OBU in 2005.

Dr. David Bebbington, professor of history at University of Stirling, Scotland, will deliver three presentations Monday, Sept. 17, at Oklahoma Baptist University.

As part of the Oklahoma Centennial Celebration, Bebbington will present “Faith and History” at 11 a.m., “The Rise of Nonconformity in England and Wales” at 4 p.m., and “Revivals and Revivalism: A Historical Overview” at 6:30 p.m. The lectures are sponsored by OBU’s department of anthropology, history and political science.

Each presentation will be in the Mabee Learning Center’s Audio Visual Auditorium.

This is Bebbington’s second visit to OBU. He previously spoke in 2005 as part of OBU’s Distinguish Speakers Committee lecture series.

Since 1976, Bebbington has been part of Stirling’s history department and was promoted to personal chair in 1999. He previously taught at the University of Alabama; Regent College; Notre Dame University; the University of Pretoria, South Africa; and Baylor University.

Bebbington is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a premier society in the United Kingdom which promotes and defends the scholarly study of the past.

Bebbington’s research and interest consists of the history of politics, religion, and society in Great Britain from the 18th to the 20th centuries and the history of the global evangelical movement.

His recent books include The Mind of Gladstone, The Dominance of Evangelicalism and Nonconformist Texts: Volume 3.
