Welcome Week Kicks Off Fall Semester This Saturday

OBU’s fall semester will officially begin Wednesday, August 22, with the start of classes. Most of the university’s new students will arrive on campus Saturday, however, to participate in Welcome Week orientation activities.

Welcome Week is designed to give students a guided orientation to campus life. First-time freshmen and transfer students participate in a variety of activities, from small group gatherings to worship services, picnics, and other end-of-summer events before the start of classes. The new students are welcomed by Welcome Week Workers – called “Tri-W’s” (try-dubs), who cut short their summer breaks to help the new students adjust to the college experience.

Dormitories will open at 9 a.m. Saturday in an annual ritual which consistently draws the praise of students’ parents. Tri-W’s greet the vehicles of new students and work to unload the packed clothing, stereo equipment and other items, relocating the possessions to the student’s dorm room.

The Welcome Week schedule begins in earnest at 3 p.m. Saturday with a New Student Orientation meeting and a Parents’ Orientation session. Welcome Week also will include a worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, August 19, in Raley Chapel, and “The Walk,” a traditional journey from the university oval to the steps of Raley Chapel. The traditional event is designed to be a bookend for the OBU student experience, which closes with the seniors’ walk to Commencement for graduation.
