OBU Hosts All-State Chorus Workshop
July 23, 2007
Vocal chords of junior high and high school students did not get the summer off as Oklahoma Baptist University recently hosted the 2007 Summer All-State Chorus Workshop.
Approximately 250 junior high, high school students and teachers participated in the weekend clinic, July 19-21. Dr. Paul Hammond, dean of OBU’s Warren M. Angell’s College of Fine Arts, said the workshop provided students the opportunity to learn the audition material for the all-state choir auditions this fall.
“The workshop gives us the opportunity to serve Oklahoma music teachers and students in a unique way while allowing us to create relationships with them,” said Hammond.
OBU music faculty, students and alumni worked together to provide sectionals and private voice lessons. The three-day workshop concluded with a mini-concert featuring selections from the all-state choir repertoire.
The all-state choirs will perform in January 2008 at the annual Oklahoma Music Educators Association convention in Tulsa.
Dr. David DeSeguirant, OBU associate professor of music and director of choral activities, coordinated the workshop. He conducted the high school choir.
Dr. Darla Eshelman, OBU associate professor of music, was the clinician for the junior high choir. Suzanne Aylor, an OBU alumna, conducted the jazz portion of the workshop.
