Christian Ethicist Speaks at OBU

David Gushee will speak at OBU Nov. 7-9

David Gushee, Christian ethicist and professor of moral philosophy at Union University in Jackson, Tenn., will visit Oklahoma Baptist University Nov. 7-9, making four speaking appearances in Shawnee.

Gushee’s visit is part of a series sponsored by OBU’s Faith and Disciplines Committee, Distinguished Speakers Committee, and campus chapters of Mortar Board and Amnesty International.

His lecture “Peacemaking in a Time of War,” sponsored by Mortar Board, will be Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m., in OBU’s Geiger Center room 220. He will address “Diversity and Community at OBU” on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m., in Geiger Center room 214.

Gushee will speak at University Baptist Church, 2515 N. Kickapoo, across from the OBU campus, on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. He will speak on “Sanctity of Life in a World of Diversity.” The presentations are free and open to the public.

A well-known commentator on Christian ethics, Gushee writes a regular column for Christianity Today and has published such recognized works as Kingdom Ethics: Following Jesus in Contemporary Context with Glen Stassen, and Only Human: Christian Reflections on the Journey Toward Wholeness.

Gushee earned his Ph.D. degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York. He has served for nine years at Union after serving three years on the faculty of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and three years on the staff of Evangelicals for Social Action.
