Dr. Jim Hansford was installed as holder of Oklahoma Baptist University’s Burton H. Patterson Professorship in Music during the 2006 OBU Convocation, Aug. 30. Hansford has served as OBU professor of music, coordinator of instrumental studies and director of bands since 1990.

The endowed position was created by Dr. Burton H. Patterson, a 1956 OBU graduate who has a longstanding relationship with his alma mater. An entrepreneur, his career has included work as an attorney, college educator and waste management executive.

Patterson and his wife, Ginger, live in Southlake, Texas, and are members of Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth. Patterson previously honored his mother and father with the establishment of an endowed professorship in journalism at OBU.

In addition, Patterson has served in numerous volunteer capacities with OBU. He is a charter member and former chair of the University’s National Board of Development and has been a leader in various OBU capital campaign efforts.

In 1987, he was awarded the Profile in Excellence Award by the OBU Alumni Association and in 1995 he received the association’s highest honor, the Alumni Achievement Award.

A respected educator-conductor for over thirty-five years, Hansford stays active as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator in the public schools and churches of Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. At OBU, Hansford teaches advanced conducting, instrumental music education and applied low brass, in addition to serving as conductor of the Symphonic Band and the OBU-Shawnee Community Orchestra.

He regularly supervises student teachers and educators in their entry-year residency programs. In the summer of 2004 Hansford lectured on “The Music Education System in the United States” and “The History of Jazz in America” for the School of Music at Xinjiang Normal University in Urumqi, China. He has served as conductor of the Oklahoma Baptist All-State Symphonic Band since 1992 including tours to England and British Columbia and national trips to Boston and Phoenix.

Hansford is an active member of First Baptist Church in Shawnee, where he sings in the choir and serves as a deacon. His wife, Conchita, a children's music specialist who directs the Shawnee Honor Choir, is Director of the Music Preparatory Department at OBU. They are the parents of two grown daughters, Candace and Tamara, and have two grand children, Channing and Clark.
