Grad's Anthem Featured at First Baptist, Oklahoma City

An anthem composed by Dr. Michael Richardson, a 1966 Oklahoma Baptist University graduate, will be premiered at First Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, on Sunday, June 18, at 6 p.m.

First Baptist Church, located at 11th Street and Robinson in downtown Oklahoma City, commissioned Richardson to compose the anthem as a tribute to the late W.J. Davis, a 1962 OBU graduate who previously served as the church’s minister of music. Davis died February 6, 2003. His wife, Marie Terrell Davis, is a 1961 OBU graduate.

In presenting the work, the First Baptist Church choir will be augmented with singers from other churches Davis served.

Several OBU faculty and alumni will participate in the performance, including Dr. Paul Hammond, dean of OBU's Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts; Dr. Jim Hansford, professor of music and director of bands; Kevin Pruiett, assistant professor of music; Max Lyall, '61; Lynn Shaw Bailey, '77; the Davis' son, Lane Davis, '89; his wife, Sabrina Davis, '87; Paul Langford, '88; and David Irby, '97.
