OBUís University Chorale will sing in five states during a 10-day tour over the Universityís spring break. The itinerary includes stops in Indiana, Kentucky, New Jersey, North Carolina and Arkansas.
Since its founding in 1963, University Chorale has been OBUís premiere mixed ensemble. Comprised of 30 auditioned vocalists, the Choraleís purpose remains the same as it was in its earliest days: ďto present advanced choral literature to the OBU campus and community.Ē University Chorale is in demand for performances across the southwestern region of the nation, and maintains an active concert schedule both on and off the OBU campus in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The Chorale is part of OBUís Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts, however the groupís membership includes non-music majors.
Over the past seven years, the Chorale has appeared at the Southwestern Division Convention of the American Choral Directors Association, the Church Music Workshop at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, the Oklahoma State Youth Choir Festival, and the Oklahoma Music Educators Association In-service Workshop.
The University Chorale is directed by Dr. David De Seguirant, director of choral activities at OBU. De Seguirant also is associate professor of music. A 1986 OBU graduate, he returned to his alma mater in 2005 after serving nine years as associate professor of music and director of choral activities at the University of the Ozarks, in Clarksville, Ark. He earned a bachelor of music degree in music theory and composition, and completed master of music and choral conducting and doctor of musical arts and choral conducting degrees from the University of Oklahoma.
The tour concert program includes sacred music from the Renaissance motets of Palestrina, anthems of 20th century composers, spirituals, and settings of familiar hymn texts. The concerts are free and open to the public.
